Acne, one of the cute little annoyances in life. It's not the most horrible thing if you have a couple blemishes on your face. Though having... let's say an army of pimples taking up real estate on every part of your face can be a little stressful. And if you're like me, you have probably tried (or are willing to try) just about anything to keep them away. Sometimes all the vitamins, diet changes and dermatologist visits just don't do the trick. And if putting loads of chemicals into your body and on your face hasn't cured you yet, let me give you my two cents.
First off, not all acne is the same. If something works for someone else, there is no guarantee that it's going to work for you. But I'm sure you are all aware!
Here are my tips and some ways you might be damaging your skin on accident.
DON'T: WASH YOUR FACE IN REALLY HOT WATER.
Long hot showers or putting a super hot wash cloth seemed like it was helping my skin, when really it was making my skin more irritated, dry and more breakout prone. A temporary fix that was damaging my skin in the long run.
INSTEAD: USE A GENTLE CLEANSER AND LUKEWARM WATER
Gentle wash off cleansers like Cetaphil, or my favorite micellar water by Bioderma Crealine are great ways to get off all the makeup and dirt, with minimal irritation. The great thing about micellar water is your skin gets a tingle feeling like it's getting clean, without the tight, dry feeling like after using a harsh cleanser.
DON'T: DRY OUT YOUR SKIN TOO MUCH
To kill acne, you do need them to "dry" out a bit. But using too many acne treatments and not nourishing your face, your solution can have the opposite effects. Flaky dry skin clogs your pores and makes it difficult for your skin to regenerate cells.
INSTEAD: USE A NATURAL NON-COSMETIC MOISTURIZER
Not all light-weight moisturizers are good for acne and not all thicker moisturizers are bad for acne. It all depends on your skin type, but try to find a more "natural" moisturizer without unnecessary chemicals or perfumes. Worry less about the thickness and just don't overdo it. This Weleda Skin Food is great since it is very rich, but natural and sinks into my skin very quickly. It also does not contain salicylic acid or acne treatments that make my skin flake, but it does not break me out! If you have sensitive skin, this stuff works wonders.
Now while my skin still isn't the best, I think the idea of using less and keeping my routine simple has really helped my skin look and feel healthier. Hope everyone had a good weekend! :)
